Shaping up as Negotiators

A Basic Negotiating Skills course was conducted for Kentz Group in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland in the comfortable surroundings of the Minella Country House Hotel, April 21 and 22, 2010.

Over two days of interactive workshops participants were asked to consider their negotiating challenges and strengths and weaknesses and craft workable strategies for when they returned to work. Themes explored included:

  • The need for negotiating skills within Kentz;
  • The negotiating process;
  • Negotiating styles;
  • Barriers to effective negotiations and related considerations;
  • Kentz case studies;
  • Action plans.

A major highlight was the Kentz perspective was provided by Paschal Kennedy, Group Proposals Manager. In question and answer format Paschal provided a master class sharing advice, practices and experiences and addressing issues raised by the participants.

At the end of each day participants are asked to reflect on what they have learned with answers including:

“I realized that I use negotiating skills much more than I thought I did. I’ll approach problems mindful of negotiating styles, the skills required, and with emphasis on desired outcomes.”

“We covered a variety of issues but doing your homework stood out. Preparation is an extremely important thing.”

“Coming in I thought that argumentative people were the best negotiators, now I see that it’s more about understanding people, their objectives and your own and adopting an appropriate approach.”

The Basic Negotiating Skills course is one of a wide range of skills enhancement courses (SECs) created for Kentz and delivered by Corporate Learning Consultants Ltd. Other SECs include:
