Skills enhancement courses, Sakhalin Island
August 2009
Three in-company skills enhancement courses (SECs) were delivered at Kentz’ office in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sakhalin Island, Russia during August. The courses were organized by Peter Ross (Country Manager) and Irina Vatazhnikova (Logistic Coordinator) from the local team and Donal O’Neill (Group Talent Development Officer) and Melissa O’Connor (Training & Development Coordinator).
The SECs delivered were:
- Time Management, August 3 & 4, 2009;
- Communication Skills, August 5 & 6, 2009; and
- Basic Negotiating Skills, August 7 & 8, 2009.
Time Management
Participants on the Time Management SEC are pictured below. Themes explored in interactive group sessions included:
- Understanding and managing what you do;
- Time management and communications; and
- Working with and through others.

Communication Skills

The Time Management SEC was followed in consecutive days by the Communication Skills SEC with participants pictured above. Among the themes explored were:
- Managerial communications;
- Interpersonal communications; and
- Individual communications styles and strengths and weaknesses.
Basic Negotiating Skills
The final course during this visit was the Basic Negotiating Skills SEC which was developed with Rory O’Donnell, Denis Prior and Joe Keogh. Discussions centred upon:
- Negotiating styles;
- Barriers and considerations when negotiating; and
- Kentz perspectives and case studies.

Brochures for SECs and other training and development programmes and courses are available from HR departments within Kentz. All courses promote greater self-awareness and personal improvement, and focus on group exercises and discussions addressing live workplace problems.
