Developing action learning coaches, First Bank of Nigeria
26th - 30th July 2011Twenty-eight senior managers from leadership positions across Nigeria participated in the inaugural action learning coach certification workshops held at First Bank’s LagosFirst Academy Learning Centre, July 26 - 30, 2011.

Action Learning is increasingly being used by some of the world’s finest companies including General Electric (GE), Microsoft, Boeing, Siemens and Samsung. The benefits are that it:
- Solves complex problems and challenges in a systems-thinking approach;
- Builds powerful teams;
- Enables individuals and teams to learn while working on real, critical tasks;
- Creates a corporate culture that can handle change and continuously learn;
- Develops leadership competencies;
- Develops systems thinking and creativity.
The First Bank managers completed Foundations of Action Learning and Certification for Action Learning Coaches 1 (CALC1) workshops lead by Dr Bea Carson (World Institute for Action Learning) and Dr Eric Sandelands and Mrs Claire Sandelands of Corporate Learning Consultants Ltd. Dr Yomi Makanjuola of Thinck Metrics was on hand to advise throughout.

A wide range of urgent and important company issues were discussed by the problem presenters and teams during the action learning coaching practice sessions and all participants went away committed to taking action and further learning.
Participants were awarded with Foundations certificates by Mrs Ayodele Jaiyesimi (Head of HR) who also participated in the program. The pioneer trainees, first participants in the Action Learning certification process included both senior line managers and HR and learning and development professionals. Among the job titles of those who participated were: Head of HR & Strategy, Head of Business Solutions, Regional Operations Manager and Business Partner. Participants were from all regions of Nigeria.
