HNC/HNDs - FAQs

How long will it take? Registration for the HNC courses normally lasts for five years. You can start a course at any time that suits you and progress at a pace that suits you and your personal circumstances. Course tutors, however, will suggest guidelines to help you manage your time most effectively. If followed, the ten modules necessary for HNC completion will typically require between two and three years, with 6–8 hours study per week, though we have had experience of particularly dedicated and able students completing their studies in substantially shorter times than this.

What support will I need or receive? Although courses are designed for self-study, tutorial support (including the marking of all assessment work) is a requirement of all courses. We can provide tutorial support in a number of ways to suit individual needs. You can access personal visits to our office in Teesside (where this is feasible), telephone, email, fax or post.

Are there any exams? There are no exams on the HNC modules, however, there are exams for the 'bridge' modules which will be certified by City & Guilds. The HNC is assessed by means of 'in-course' Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). The TMAs contain a series of questions/assignments which can be used to satisfy the assessment criteria necessary to qualify for certification. Some of the modules also require practical work. Facilities for practical work should be arranged with the support centre before you start the course. The final assessment for each module is an interview by the module tutor. This enables the tutor to authenticate your work and confirm the grade of the award. These interviews will normally be conducted by your support centre.

How is the HNC awarded? Each module, when successfully completed, will be graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction. A Pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and Distinction grades are awarded for higher level achievement.
